Army-Navy Football 2010

Well it’s that time again, time for Navy to continue its dominance over Army in our Annual Rivalry.
Army’s hosting this year and for the 4th straight year, we will view the game with Army at the Fox Sports Grill in Atlantic Station. Go to Army’s Army/Navy Game page, to get all of the details and RSVP. The sooner the better, in order to ensure Fox Sports Grill will have everything just right for a Navy victory.
We have been challenged again this year from the Army faithful. They continue to believe Navy is very ripe for an upset. And as a demonstration of their confidence, they plan to have more of their fans at Fox Sports Grill for Army than we will have for Navy.
Although I seriously doubt Army’s ability to beat us on the gridiron, I don’t doubt their resolve to put a large number of Army fans in Fox Sports Grill on the 11th. I believe we owe Army the opportunity to be loud and boistous in support of their team. But we also owe them the full and complete acknowledgement of their incompetence to beat us on the football field or in our support for our team.
I urge all area alumni and guests, if you’re not attending the game in Philly, to join us on the 11th at 1:30PM (1330) to show Army we not only continue to talk the talk, but we also still walk the walk. Please join us; we need your voices and presence.
GO NAVY-BEAT ARMY!!!

President’s Corner

Fall is here. Maybe not by the date on the calendar, but by the sound of Football in the air, we know it’s Fall. Navy’s season has started and we are looking forward to another great year culminating in retaining the Commander’s in Chief Trophy.
Not to sound like a broken record, but we are knee deep into our Membership Drive and we need you. If you’ve already renewed your membership for 2010, you’re ahead of the game. If you haven’t, now is the time to make it happen and here’s why:

  • New “Chapter Members Only” benefits go into effect starting in September 2010
  • Invitation to members only Dark Ages Dinner/Dance in February
  • Chapter Member pricing for Lobsterfest tickets
  • Special “Professional Networking Event” invitations
  • Monthly Chapter Newsletter delivered to your inbox automatically
  • Advance notification of Alumni functions and activities

And the list goes on…
The first benefit of membership will go into effect at the upcoming September Luncheon. We will institute a 2-tier event cost, one for members and a slightly higher cost for non-members. This type of pricing scheme is a very common practice for many professional organizations and we believe it’s a benefit our members would find of value.
We are also in the middle of revamping our website and one of the new benefits are members will enjoy is 24/7 access to our Chapter database, through registration with a secure login and password process.
Many other benefits are also in development as we move into the last part of 2010 and into 2011. Your Board is committed to enhancing the value of an Atlanta Chapter Membership and your input is welcomed for consideration.
To become a member simple go to our website and download a membership form and mail it in or click on the link to register on the USNAAA website and complete your application there.
You’ll continue to hear more about our membership drive throughout the remainder of the year and it’s important to say again that our Chapter is only as good as its members and the individuals who are willing to actively participate in the events, activities and leadership of the group. So, if you haven’t signed on, do it today and start reaping the benefits.
AUGUST EVENTS
Our speaker for our August luncheon was CAPTAIN R. B. “Buddy” Wellborn, USN (ret.) Class ’59. Capt. Wellborn was not only a very informative speaker on Navy Football, it’s history and his review and predictions for the 2010 season, but also very entertaining and engaging.
He even prepared a handout of his assessment of Navy’s 2010 team rooster, it’s schedule, opponents and outcomes. You can download a copy of this and his bio at our website.
We had a huge crowd for the event and there was barely enough space to move around between the seats throughout the luncheon. In attendance: Paul Borer ’70, Bill Rentz ’55, Ed Sundberg ’68, Bill Holmes ’64, Ed Hux ’61, George Hutcherson ’70, Bill Williams ’65, Matt Foxman ’96, Reggie Vachon ’58, Bill Donges ’71, Ed Brownlee ’81, Jon Barton ’66, Brian Huey ’90, Stew Caldwell ’65, Jim Slemenda ’66, Jeff Lewis ’70, Angus McLean ’84, Greg Straessle ’73, Paul Qualey ’88, Rick Cobb ’85, Jerry Mackey ’54, Rick Haley ’72, Chad Hyde ’91, Steve Peters ’84, Doug Edwards ’86, Karl Schwelm ’71, Mitch Rowland ’71, Mike Midas ’60, Michael Lores ’74, Candler Crim ’55, Keny Hamlin ’70, Vince Obsitnik ’59, Jim Hatch ’47, Jeff Johnson ’67, Paul Hurst ‘62, Mike Miller ’56, Carl McCallum ’60, Jeff Johnson ’84, Steve Frederick ’72, Wes Slagle ’02, Ned hunter ’81, Brian Jackson ’81, Kenn Burley ‘91.

Website, databases, and membership drive

We’re deep into late summer here in Atlanta. The days are hot, the Braves are again in the middle of a pennant race and the kids are reluctantly preparing to return to school for fall semester. As our Chapter prepares for the start of another great August to December slate of events and activities, it’s also the time to check on your Chapter Membership status.
If you’ve already renewed your membership for 2010, you’re ahead of the game. If you haven’t, now is the time to make it happen and here’s why:
1) New “Chapter Members Only” benefits go into effect starting in September 2010
2) Invitation to members only Dark Ages Dinner/Dance in February
3) Chapter Member pricing for Lobsterfest tickets
4) Special “Professional Networking Event” invitations
5) Monthly Chapter Newsletter delivered to your inbox automatically
6) Advance notification of Alumni functions and activities
7) And the list goes on…
And based on the size of our Chapter, as compared to other Alumni Chapter, if we fall in the top eight, we receive an automatic Trusteeqil slot on the Alumni Foundation Board. Presently, we rank as the 7th largest Chapter and our representative is Steve Frederick ’72. This is the year that we count memberships again and we are feeling the heat from several other Chapters that are determined to move up.
You’ll hear more about our membership drive as fall approaches, yet it’s important to say that our Chapter is only as good as its members and the individuals who are willing to actively participate in the events, activities and leadership of the group. So, if you haven’t signed on, do it today and start reaping the benefits.
JULY EVENTS
July’s luncheon was our only event this month and our own Ned Hunter ’81, newly appointed Area Blue & Gold Officer Coordinator, was our guest speaker. Ned detailed the Program’s goals and objectives for this upcoming congressional appointment year and some ways Chapter members and other local alumni can provide assistance. It was a great presentation and you can find details on our website. Special guests were Theresa Milligan from Senator Chambliss’ office and Nancy Brooks from Senator Isakson’s office.
Alumni attendees included: Paul Borer ’70, Bill Rentz ’55, Ed Sundberg ’68, Bill Holmes ’64, Ed Hux ’61, George Hutcherson ’70, Bill Williams ’65, Matt Foxman ’96, Reggie Vachon ’58, John Morrow ’84, Bill Donges ’71, Ed Brownlee ’81, Jeff Jones ’77, Jon Barton ’66, Brian Huey ’90, Stew Caldwell ’65, Jim Slemenda ’66, Clint Johnson ’60.

Senior Chapter Member Captain George S. O’Connell, (USN Ret.) Passes Away at Age 96

Sadly our senior Chapter member, Captain George O’Connell,
Class of 1935, passed away on Sunday July 18th.

Our thoughts and prayers go out to George’s family and
friends, and in particular to his nephew Reggie Vachon, Class of 1958, who
always affectionately referred to George as "Uncle George".

George could always be counted upon to be present at
Chapter luncheons and events.  He never failed to attend the Chapter
Dark Ages Party in black tie, and in true Navy tradition always arrived
with "a date" as he so charmingly put it.

His classmate, and Chapter member, Bill Wideman passed
away some time ago.  Somehow it just won’t be the same without our
two senior members from the Class of 1935.

A memorial service will be held at 2:00 PM on Monday, July
26th, at the Lenbrook Retirement Community in Buckhead.  The funeral
will be held at 9:00 AM on Saturday, July 24th, at Sacred Heart of Jesus
Catholic Church, in Anniston, Alabama.
