Passing of Admiral James D. Watkins, ’49, USN (Retired)

It is with great sadness that U. S. Naval Academy Alumni Association inform you of the passing of Admiral James D. Watkins, USN (Retired) Class of 1949.  The admiral was the 22nd Chief of Naval Operations, served as U.S. Secretary of Energy during the George Bush Administration, and a 2001 Distinguished Graduate; he passed away July 26. He was 85.

“Few have lived as full or accomplished a life as Adm. Watkins,” said Secretary of the Navy Ray Mabus. “Although we mourn his passing, we celebrate his accomplishments not only as a consummate Naval Officer and public servant, but also as a man who understood the importance of taking care of the entire Navy family.”
A 1949 graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy, Watkins became CNO June 30, 1982 and served until June 30, 1986 during the height of the Cold War. A career submariner, he also commanded the U.S. Sixth Fleet and later the U.S. Pacific Fleet.

2013 Distinguished Graduate Award Nominations

On behalf of the Naval Academy Alumni Association, please consider providing a nomination for the 2013 Distinguished Graduate Award to Admiral Joseph Prueher ‘64, Chairman of the Distinguished Graduate Award Committee. As alumni leaders, you and your fellow alumni know fellow graduates that embody the spirit of this award, its nominating criteria, and who should be brought forward as candidates.

Nominating packages of candidates for the 2013 Distinguished Graduate Award should arrive at the Naval Academy Alumni Association no later than Thursday, 1 November 2012. Nominations must be typewritten documents using the format provided in the Nomination Instructions/Form. To be competitive, strong, written justification must be provided for each category in the nominating criteria.  Although it is suggested that nominations be originated by Class and/or Chapter Presidents, any alum can submit an appropriately documented nomination package, forwarded via their Class and/or Chapter President for endorsement. Nominees need not necessarily be a member of the Chapter or Class forwarding the nomination.
If you have provided a nominee before who was not selected, his or her nomination may remain active for a total of 3 consecutive years before taking a year off. After the year off, a new letter must be submitted stating that the class or chapter wishes the nomination to be active for that year. Please see Nomination/Instructions/Form for complete instructions and policy.
After the submission deadline of 1 November 2012, the nomination packages will be compiled and submitted to the Distinguished Graduate Award Selection Committee.  The Selection Committee will convene in December 2012 to review the nominations and select the 2013 Distinguished Graduates from a group of highly qualified and deserving nominees.
2013 Distinguished Graduates’ nominees are graduates who have provided a lifetime of service, made significant and distinguished contributions to the nation, and demonstrated a strong interest in supporting the Navy and theUnited StatesNavalAcademy. In turn, theNavalAcademyas an institution will be highlighted as a “national treasure” and the premier source for leaders in our military, government and civilian arenas.
Individuals requiring additional assistance or information should contact Noreen Frenaye, our Distinguished Graduate Award Manager, at Noreen.Frenaye@usna.com or (410) 295-4016.
