January BOD Meeting Minutes

January 2012 BOD Minutes
Attendees
Ed Brown, Pete Knoetgen, Scott Evans, Ples Bruce and Jim Slemenda
Treasurer’s Report (Pete Knoetgen ‘77)
N/A
Membership Drive Update (Angus McLean ‘84/Jon Barton ‘66)
No change in membership.  Current chapter membership is 227 dues paying members.  There are 296 local members in the Alumni data base.
Chapter Trustee Update (Ples Bruce ‘77)
Trustees met last quarter and reviewed the 2020 plan.  One key point of the 2020 review included Cyber Security.  USNA is planning to build a new state of the art center to house all our cyber security initiatives.
Ples provided an update from the nomination committee.  Admiral Robert Natter, USNA ’67, is the selection of the nomination committee to replace the retiring Admiral Steve Abbott, USNA ’66, as the next chairman of the alumni association.  Natter’s nomination will move forward to the BOT for confirmation in the spring.
In addition to the chairman’s selection, there are two regional trustee positions up for grabs in the Mid-Atlantic and West Coast.
The Alumni House is quickly becoming too small for the needs of the nation alumni association & foundation.  Additional locations in the Annapolis area are being considered.
Monthly Luncheon Update (Ed Brownlee ’81)
January’s speaker will be Bob Kerr, 6th District Director Pearl Harbor Survivors Association.  Mr. Kerr was a pilot with the Army Air Corp stationed at Pearl Harbor.
February speaker is TBD.
The chapter is looking for potential future speakers for the start of 2012.  Potential speakers discussed include the local USO leadership and Brian Stann, USMC and Class of 1999.
Old/New Business (Ed Brownlee ’81)
Army-Navy Football Gathering
The 2011 game was a big win for the Mids, the local chapter and Dantanna’s at the CNN Center.  We had a large number of last minute walk-ons that helped drive our alumni count to the event to close to 150!  Add in West Point’s contribution to the event and it’s safe to say we had a very spirited group.
Army made it a close, but in the end the Mids prevailed 27-21.  That makes 10 straight wins for USNA over our biggest rival, the Black Knights of West Point.  Thanks to all the alumni who made it to last month’s event.
Next game for Navy takes place in Dublin, Ireland against the Fighting Irish of Notre Dame on 9-1-12.  Go Navy!
There are two special Navy football programs that will be making their way to TV and the internet.  Showtime is broadcasting A Game of Honor, http://sports.sho.com/#/football/specials/army-navy/a-game-of-honor and From Philadelphia to Fallujah, http://www.armynavy2001.com/ANgame/Trailer.html
Alumni Social/Networking Event

New Atlanta Chapter Facebook page was launched in September.  Our new link can be found at http://www.facebook.com/pages/U-S-Naval-Academy-Alumni-Association-Atlanta-Chapter-USNAAAA/111534325567216
Ed to continue to make chapter members aware of our Facebook presence during the monthly luncheons.  Please pass the word and the link on to our local Shipmates.

USNA Gospel Choir
The Gospel Choir came to Atlanta on MLK Weekend, January 14-16 and performed in front of two large crowds, one at Historic Ebenezer Baptist Church and a second in Forsyth, GA.  The events were a big success for USNA.  Bravo Zulu to our very own Mike Hill, USNA ’77.

2012 Naval Academy Summer Seminar

The Naval Academy Summer Seminar (NASS) application is now available online for High School Juniors, January 3rd, 2012.  http://www.usna.edu/Admissions/nass.htm  This is a great opportunity to visit USNA and gain an understanding about life as a midshipman.  By making the application available earlier this year, more juniors will have the opportunity to begin their Preliminary Application for the Class of 2017 by applying to NASS.    NASS continues to serve as a great marketing program designed to introduce students throughout the entire country to USNA.  Please remember that attendance at NASS in no way guarantees an Offer of Appointment to USNA and conversely not being selected for NASS will in no way hinder a candidate’s chances for admission.  There will be three sessions held on the following days:  June 2 – June 7, June 9 – June 14, June 16 – June 21.

Admiral Robert J. Natter, USN (Ret.), Elected as Chair Of the United States Naval Academy Alumni Association Board of Trustees

December 16, 2011
At a meeting in Annapolis, Maryland on 8 December 2011, the 28 members of the United States Naval Academy Alumni Association Board of Trustees elected Admiral Robert J. Natter ’67, USN (Ret.), to a three-year term as Chair. Admiral Natter succeeds Admiral Steve Abbot ’66, USN (Ret.), and will assume office at the conclusion of the incumbent’s term in May 2012.
Admiral Natter completed a distinguished naval career in 2003 and is now the president of R. J. Natter & Associates, LLC, a national consulting firm specializing in corporate and defense strategy. He also serves on the Board of Directors of BAE Systems, Inc., a global defense, security and aerospace company.
“I am honored to have the opportunity to work with our dedicated alumni and the Alumni Association Board of Trustees as we support the Naval Academy and serve our great alumni around the world” stated Bob Natter.
During his 37 years on active duty, Admiral Natter held commands worldwide, including Commander of the U.S. Seventh Fleet, Commander of the U.S. Atlantic Fleet, Commander of U.S. Fleet Forces Command, Commander of all U.S. Navy and Coast Guard homeland defense forces under the U.S. Northern Command, and Commander-in-Chief of the NATO Western Atlantic Command.
After joining the naval reserve at age 17, Admiral Natter completed one year of enlisted service before entering the U. S. Naval Academy.
